Risk Essay

This is my report comparing the two practitioners who focused on animation for their careers and the different paths they ended up taking. The first is Tim Burton and the other is William Hanna and Joseph Barbera who formed the 'Hanna-Barbera' company. As they formed the business and worked on animations together I will refer to them here simply by their company name.

The main difference between the two artists is their style of art. Tim Burton creates his work with a dark edge, appealing to adult audiences as well as children. One example of this is the film 'The Nightmare Before Christmas'; whilst this movie only had a PG rating in the UK, it also had an expanded target audience of adults as well, due to the sharp edge and tone. Hanna-Barbera however, created toons such as the well known Tom and Jerry, and Scooby Doo. They were one of the first companies to release cartoons for television starting with Top Cat in 1961. Their audience is and has always been entertainment for children, and the way they reach out to both audiences is with obvious humor.

Hannah-Barbera used hand drawn and then Cel animation and looping techniques throughout their work and have begun to be known for their simple sound effects and animations. This was due to their limited budget, time restraints and also not a lot of technology for CGI had not yet been invented during their early works. However, for the films they created, the quality of their work had to be improved and less looping techniques were used. On the other hand, Tim Burton came into animation a lot later on, starting with Beetlejuice released in 1988. The films he directed used 3d animation which increased in quality as technology also improved.
